Diagnosing a hot water fault here is the same as anywhere. Sydney's water is soft, so a storage tank is protected by a sacrificial anode that corrodes so the steel does not, and the day that anode is spent the tank begins to go. That or a burnt element is most of it.
What is different is the geometry. The orchards here were subdivided from the late 1940s, and the houses that went up have been extended repeatedly since: a bathroom added, a kitchen moved, a room off the back.
The cylinder generally did not move. So the run from it to the newest fixture can be a great deal longer than the footprint suggests, and the complaint that arrives is not no hot water but a long wait at one particular tap.
That is worth separating out, because it is not a fault in the unit. Replacing a perfectly good cylinder does not shorten a pipe run, and somebody should say so before you buy one.

On electric storage, look for a tripped circuit at the switchboard, which explains more call-outs than anything else. On gas, check the pilot or ignition and that the supply is on. On either, find out whether an isolation valve was closed by somebody working on something else. Beyond that, leave it and ring.
